Farmers Market Associate

Reports to: Farmers Market Supervisor/ Retail Manager
Position Description: Seasonal/ Part Time Employee 

Job Overview:
This is a sales associate position at our farm market. You will go to various farmers market locations and sell our home grown produce and other novelty items. You will be responsible for keeping displays full, assisting customers, and packing and unpacking the truck. Display and customer service are key elements of this position. You will be offered up to 25 hours per week based on availability, job performance and season needs. Position is not permitted to work over 40 hours per week (weeks are defined by the pay period).
 
Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Help with the packing and unpacking of items to and from the truck before and after the market
  • Ring up customers using correct buttons
  • Be familiar with all the product pricing
  • Serve customers, answering their questions and assisting them in their shopping
  • Set up and take down tents, tables and displays
  • Ensure quality of produce and plants are up to standards, if you wouldn’t buy it don’t put it out
  • Communicate any problems, conflicts, or discrepancies to manager
  • Make sure market truck and farmers market area are kept clean and presentable

Minimum Requirements:

  • Flexibility with schedule and ability to work at least one weekend day per week
  • Available at least 20-30 hours per week
  • Able to lift 40 lbs.
  • Knowledge and love of food is a bonus

Retail Cashier

Reports to: Retail/ Store Manager & “Day of” Manager
Position Description: Seasonal/ Part Time Employee 

Job Overview:
This position is employed April through December or seasonally between these months.  This is a sales associate position at our farm market. You will sell our home grown produce and other novelty items at our store. You will be responsible for keeping displays full, assisting customers, and any daily tasks. You will also be responsible for promoting our tourism events and educating our customers about various topics. You will be offered up to 25 hours per week based on availability, job performance and season needs. Position is not permitted to work over 40 hours per week (weeks are defined by the pay period).
 
Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Keep store organized, keep displays full, and clean
  • Serve customers who call or visit the stand, answering their questions and
  • assisting them in their shopping
  • Open and close the farm stand
  • Ensure quality of produce and plants are up to standards
  • Sell products in store
  • Communicate any problems, conflicts, or discrepancies to manager
  • Keep back cooler inventory filled
  • Take orders in the correct format with all necessary information and make sure managers are aware
  • Check all expiration dates of products in store and in back inventory to make sure nothing past its date is going on the shelves, and that anything coming close to its expiration dates is marked for reduced pricing

Agritourism Cashier/ Greeter

Reports to: General Retail Manager
Position Description: Seasonal/ Part Time Employee 

Job Overview:
This position is seasonal and will be during our PYO seasons or festival seasons. You are representing our farm and helping add value to our customers' experience here on the farm. You are a source of information and are there to be a helpful attendant to the customer.
 
Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Checking customers out for various activities depending on season
  • Knowledge of what is going on at the farm and be able to answer any questions the customer may have or be able to point them to the manager if you do not know the answer
  • Know pricing information for all activities
  • Be able to help direct customers to where things are located on the farm
  • Interact with all customers
  • Set up activity stations, make sure you have all required materials to open station
  • Close up activity stations and make sure everything is put away where it belongs
  • Communicate any issues to the retail manager

Minimum Requirements:

  • Flexibility with schedule and ability to work weekends
  • Available 15-20 hours per week
  • Able to work at least 1-2 holidays per year
  • Able to lift 30 lbs.

Field Worker

Reports to: Field Supervisor
 
Job Overview:
Your role is to ensure proper planting, cultivation and harvesting of the various crops grown on the farm. Ort Farms is known for the Quality of our produce and a key part of the success with growing quality produce lies in the Field Worker position. As customer impressions of the farm are extremely important, the role of Field Worker is critical to ensuring a professional, clean, and organized environment. This includes but is not limited to the greenhouse area, barns, storage facilities, fields, farm buildings, farmyards, etc. Communication with the Field Supervisor is key to this position related to crop issues, equipment problems and supplies needed to perform daily tasks. This position requires that individuals work as part of a large field team and that they exhibit a strong understanding and knowledge of various crops and agriculture practices.
 
Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Responsible for cultivation, preparing land and greenhouses, planting, and harvesting of various fruits, vegetables, flowers, grains, and hay.
  • Responsible for planting greenhouse plants/crops, irrigating crops, preparing plants for sale and movement of crops, as necessary.
  • Duties will also include: Irrigation activity, laying drip tape, plastic, and clean-up of same at seasons end. Plant/Transplant seeds, seedlings, and trees. Weed control, thinning of plants, pruning and inspection of crops/plants. Application of fertilizer. Install bird netting and other crop protection. Install trellis’, stakes and other crop support systems
  • Responsible for general organization, cleanliness and maintenance of farm grounds, greenhouses, barns, storage facilities, tool sheds, fields, and farm buildings. This responsibility will assist the Ground Keepers position with these organization/cleanliness duties
  • Responsible for repairs of fences and farm buildings as a core shared responsibility with the GroundsKeepers position
  • Responsible for the proper operation, maintenance and repair of tractors, farm equipment, machinery, and vehicles including all-terrain vehicles
  • Responsible for the harvest of crops, loading/unloading of wagons/trucks to transport crops and prepare crops for sale and delivery to markets
  • Responsible for post-harvest treatment of crops: inspection, sorting, washing, and packing of harvested produce
  • Responsible for stacking and delivery of hay/straw
  • Responsible for keeping the farm clear of garbage/debris and your work environment clean and organized (for example: tools need to be returned to shed and organized, garbage/debris removed from tractors, all-terrain vehicles, forklift, etc.)
  • Responsible for inventory of tools/supplies
  • Responsible for notifying/communicating with Supervisor/Manager regarding any field problems, produce issues, equipment problems or supplies needed
  • Responsible for set-up, maintaining, cleaning and breakdown of festival and agritourism facilities
  • Responsible for assisting customers, fresh cut of trees, wrapping and loading trees for customers (must know how to properly tie down trees)
  • Responsible for the proper organization of tractors and farm equipment at the end of the day (i.e., Tractors/equipment returned to their proper parking location.
  • Responsible for cleaning and storage of farm tractors/equipment at season’s end

Minimum Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of various produce and agricultural practices
  • Available to work a minimum of 40 hours per week from May-November.
  • Flexibility with schedule and ability to work one weekend day per week on a rotational basis
  • Must enjoy fast paced work environment
  • Must be able to work independently and as an integral part of the larger farm team
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written directions/instructions
  • Must have a basic understanding of the English language (written and oral)
